A couple accused of a bloody Northern California shooting spree that killed two sheriff's deputies, wounded a third and left a motorist fighting for his life were charged Tuesday with murder, attempted murder and carjacking, authorities said. Marcelo Marquez, known to federal authorities as Luis Enrique Monroy-Bracamonte, and Janelle Marquez Monroy terrorized communities on the eastern edge of Sacramento Oct. 24, starting with the shooting of Sacramento Sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver in the parking lot of a motel. Marquez, 34, was charged with two counts of murder with special circumstances, which can bring the death penalty, along with one count of attempted murder and several counts of carjacking, according to a criminal complaint released by Sacramento County District Attorney Rod Norgaard. An illegal immigrant was convicted Friday of killing two California cops.
Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamontes, a Mexican citizen who repeatedly entered the U.S. illegally, was found guilty Friday of killing Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer County Sheriff’s Detective Michael Davis Jr. in 2014, the Associated Press reports.
Bracamontes shot Oliver outside a motel and then killed Davis a few hours later. He ultimately surrendered after a standoff with local authorities.

As the verdict was read, he smiled at the victims’ families. “I’m going to kill more cops soon,” he said as he was taken away. His callous behavior was on display throughout the trial, during which he shouted threats in Spanish and English, vowing to slaughter more police and murder jurors.
“I killed fucking cops. They’re fucking dead. I don’t fucking regret that,” he said at one point during the trial.
Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty for Bracamontes. The defense argued that the convicted killer is mentally ill and was high at the time of the murders, as he was reportedly on methamphetamine. A judge, however, found Bracamontes competent enough to stand trial for his crimes.
The defense also tried to argue that anti-immigrant sentiment stirred up by President Donald Trump would make it impossible for Bracamontes to receive a fair trial, but this argument failed to sway the judge.
In court, Bracamontes regularly shouted that he is guilty and begged for the death penalty. He even threatened to kill his defense attorneys during the trial.
Sentencing will reportedly occur on March 5.
