A Saudi Arabian citizen residing in Oklahoma was charged for visa fraud because he made false statements about trying to join an Al-Qaeda training camp years ago, a Tuesday report revealed.
The FBI arrested 35-year-old Naif Abdulaziz Alfallaj after they connected Alfallaj’s fingerprints with a document for an application for an Al-Qaeda training camp, The New York Times reported.
The 2000 document was for Farooq camp where four of the 9/11 terrorists trained. Alfallaji apparently signed the application document when he was 17.
The complaint against Alfallaji alleges that he committed visa fraud by falsely answering questions on whether he had any terrorist connections or if he had supported such groups when he was applying to enter the United States in 2011. He was able to come into the country on a non-immigrant visa application because his wife was a foreign student at the time, according to the Department of Justice.
Alfallaji faces two charges of visa fraud, one for obtaining a visa by fraudulent means for the past six years, while the other count is for gaining a pilot’s license by using his fraudulent visa, according to the DOJ. His third charge stems from making false statements to the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security about his background, the DOJ noted.
Officials told TheNYT that Alfallaji submitted his application to the Al-Qaeda training camp shortly after the terrorist organization declared its plan to harm the United States.
Alfallaji pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently in custody with U.S marshals, as authorities believe he is a flight risk.
